Hansaviertel in Charlottenburg
This Cultural Wednesday we will visit Hansaviertel in Charlottenburg! After the bombing raids in the Second World War, the Hansa Quarter was almost completely destroyed. This area became a symbol of the city of Berlin's desire for renewal. In 1952, 53 architects from 13 countries were invited to participate in a competition, all of them advocates of western-modern ideas of "new building". At the same time, "new building" was a reaction to the construction of Stalinallee in 1952 (later: Karl-Marx-Allee) in East Berlin. The Hansa Quarter in West Berlin was intended to counter the Soviet monumental architecture in the Eastern part of the city with an emphatically international and modern cityscape.
