Russian Cinema Days 2005
Dear Film Lovers, Russia enthusiasts and others, who would like to join in! From 10th - 16th March 2005 the Film theatre in Hackesche Höfe will be hosting the first Russian Cinema Days in Berlin. In total, there will be seven festival days comprising of 35 films of varying genres and styles, two concerts, many seminars, workshops and readings. The focus of these days is a very relevant one in the context of Berlin: „A Foreigner in your Homeland – Russian Germans in Germany.“ We will be discussing this film through films which are concerned with the past, present and future of these people. We will also be dealing with „The comeback of Russian Cinema“ with a new Russian film. Russian Cinema has been changing radically over the last few years. After the film industry in Russia almost collapsed in the 90s because it was only producing Hollywood re-make style films and brought the older generation of film-makers to the point of break-down, the industry is finally recovering and producing serious and real pieces. That's why we do not want to miss out on such films as „The Return“ (A. Swjaginzew), „Koktebel“ (B. Chlebnikow und A. Popogrebski), „Kukuschka – The Cuckoo“ (A. Rogoshkin) or „Papa“ (W. Maschkow), all of which we will be presenting during our Russian Cinema Days.
Other highlights include the premieres of student films of the Moscow Film Academy (VGIK). These include works by various film-makers from Moscow and discussions about our own experience with the problems and future of Russian Cinema. Russian directors will be given free reign in the German capital city to communicate their ideas and create interest among the Berlin citizens.
In addition, we will be trying to solve the practical problems of the perhaps boring, but certainly influential theme of nature. Until now, there have not been many new Russian films in the German cinemas, which is probably due to the individual companies themselves and the lack of Russian representatives in the German film industry. We want to help change this by improving communication and contact between the people in the industry.
The Russian Cinema Days will be the first project of its kind in Berlin. They should not only present Russian Cinema to the German citizens but also give Russian film-makers an important opportunity for exchange in the capital city. Bridges will be built between Russian and German film-makers and we encourage everyone to help maintain them. The personal interaction between Russian guests will make the festival a lively place for cultural exchange and appreciation. After all, aren't the best contacts made over a glass of wine (or vodka)?! There will be many opportunities for this and other methods of communicaton at the festival.
The organisers would like to wish all those involved and attending a great time and hope to create unforgettable exchanges between cultures! We hope you enjoy the films - „Do swidanija“!
