The World is not my Village: 4th Part

Losers and Winners

A film and discussion event by Sprachenatelier with Lotte Arndt and Claudia Schilling

"Losers and Winners“, a documentary by Ulrike Franke and Micahel Loeken (Deutschland 2006, 96 min.) "Losers and Winners" describes the transportation of the Kokerei Kaiser Chair from Dortmund to China. 400 Chinese workers take apart the piece and rebuild it in their own country. The film tells of the winners and losers of globalisation. The film makers follow along with the dismantling of the former centre of the German coal and steel industry for 1 ½ years, telling the stories about their journey.

It documents how the people of the Ruhr Valley reacted to the arrival and operation of the Chinese, and how they reacted when the most modern coking plant in the world disappeared, along with their pride. But the burdens and conflicts of a 60 hour week on the part of the Chinese workers is also shown. They have to deal with being away from home and their families, floating between excitement for the future and a sense of doubt. Highly motivated people from low-wage countries meet financially stable people, but without prospects, from an industrial nation, Two worlds collide, but who will win or lose when the available work and this „technological wonder“ leaves the country, making the effects of globalisation painful while its center flourishes? The film cleverly presents the way in which people of different backgrounds interact in detail, winning over the audience on both sides.

This event is the fourth in a row of the „The World is not my Village - Mankind in a globalised world“ series. After the event we invite people and organisations who are interested to take part in an open forum discussion with the themes of globalisation, migration, nature, people and lifestyle.
