Book Reading by Cem Gülay
"Turk-Sam"
Cem Gülay, son of a Turkish immigrant, was born in 1970 in Hamburg. After he graduated in 1991, he wanted to study further, but decided to go for something a bit different: he became a gangster. He enjoys the fast money and respect, forgetting about the academic path he was going to take. This changed in 2001, when he decided to abandon his life of crime. Since he left the gangster scene, Gülay has been busying himself with the helping immigrated youths integrate themselves into society and steering them away from a life of crime. In this way, he wants to stress the point that young people face the same choices as he once did; that it could happen to anyone.
In his autobiography "Turk-Sam", which was published at the end of the year, Gülay tells his story and recounts his journey. He wants to stress that the question of „How did this happen to me?“ is irrelevant; it's far more important to encourage the youth to do positive things. In his book, Gülay makes the reader aware of this growing problem, which is comparable with the situation which the French Banlieue once faced. Many young immigrants are sucked into this system where violence is the ruling force. This often has fatal consequences and many end up in jail.
Cem Gülay will be coming to Sprachenatelier, to read some of his book "Turk-Sam". After the reading, we will hold a podium discussion to ask him questions and comment on the book, but also to talk about the themes of immigration and youth crime in general. Any literature or culture enthusiasts are very welcome to join in!
