Culture Wednesday - District Pankow
The Berlin district of Pankow is located in the north-east of Berlin, which in turn is divided into around 13 smaller districts and neighbourhoods. Only a few tram stops away from the vibrant centre, you can experience a quiet and particularly family-oriented living situation with its special charm in almost every street. Pankow is a popular and steadily growing Berlin district that owes its name to the small river Panke, which flows picturesquely through Niederschönhausen Palace Park. Pankow includes not only Prenzlauer Berg and Weißensee, but also Bürgerpark Pankow, Amalienpark, Schlosspark Schönhausen, Kissingenviertel and Pankower Tor, which are among the best known.
In the 19th century, Berliners enjoyed themselves on Sundays in rural Pankow and wealthy citizens spent their summer days here. Pankow experienced its first building boom during the Gründerzeit. Magnificent villa neighbourhoods and many beautifully maintained parks with extensive green spaces were built, which are still relaxing islands of tranquillity today. Nice pubs, well-known cultural centres, small theatres and cafés ensure that young and old alike will never be bored in Pankow.
