Culture Wednesday - Altstadt Spandau
Spandau is a neighbourhood among Middle Ages, Reformation and modern times. Despite all the new buildings, its long history is still very much present in the historic centre. Today, Spandau's historic centre is a pedestrian zone and shopping mile. Even though the old buildings have been lost in wars and fires, the layout of the alleyways bears witness to the medieval layout. Houses of different architectural styles are lined up next to each other and tell of different eras. The Reformation Square with St Nikolai's Church, a three-aisled Gothic brick church, is well worth a visit. Not far away is the "Gothic House", which was built in the 15th century. Today, the "Gothic House" houses a museum of the town's history and temporary exhibitions. A longer section of the 14th century city wall remains on the Viktoria-Ufer. Via the street Am Juliusturm you reach the "Kolk" on the island of Behnitz. The Kolk is the oldest settlement area in Spandau. Picturesque restaurants on the banks of the Havel, narrow alleyways and the Church of St Mary on Behnitz, which today hosts cultural events, attract many tourists. The Spandau Citadel, one of the most important Renaissance fortresses in Europe, is just one underground station away. Spandau's old town can also be explored with the free audio guide.
