Culture Wednesday - Nikolai Quarter
Nikolaiviertel can be described as a last piece of old Berlin. Better still, the cradle of the city: Berlin was founded around the church of St. Nikolai. Here you can sense and discover the origins of today's metropolis. You can take a leisurely stroll through the pedestrian zone, through alleyways and along the Spree. There are over 20 restaurants, cafés and pubs in the Nikolaiviertel for a break while strolling through the city or a cozy evening - many with regional dishes and a typical old Berlin atmosphere.
There are several highlights worth seeing on a stroll through the district: The Ephraim Palace, the founding fountain, the Knoblauchhaus, the Nussbaum restaurant, Kurfürstenhaus, the bronze statue of St. George. And of course the Nikolaikirche, which has stood here for almost 800 years and was rebuilt after the war to celebrate Berlin's 750th anniversary. Today it houses a museum with exhibitions about the Nikolaikirche and the Nikolaiviertel. It has not been used as a church since 1939, but now regularly it hosts concerts.
