Culture Wednesday - East Side Gallery

The Wall used to divide Berlin into the east side and the west side of the city. The East Side Gallery is the biggest well-preserved section of it. It‘s a 1.316 metre long segment between Ostbahnhof and Oberbaumbrücke and it‘s shaped with drawings that represent the changes due to the Fall of the Wall.

After the Fall of the Wall in 1989 artists from all over the world came to Berlin, with the aim of leaving visible evidence of their joy and new hope. The artists transformed the sad grey of the Wall into pictures that carry an atmosphere of freedom and reconciliation.

Some of the famous paintings on the wall like „Der Bruderkuss“ by Dmitri Vrubel or the breaking through the Wall Trabant by Birgit Kinders are still popular postcard motifs nowadays.
