Culture Thursday - Exhibition 'in_finite. Living with Death' + Fiesta de Día de Muertos
This week there is a small change and we present to you a Culture Thursday instead of Culture Wednesday due to the festival Día de Muertos (Spanish for Day of the Dead) which takes place yearly on the 2nd November. The festival originates from Mexico and is considered as the biggest and largest in the country. It celebrates a joyful reunion, with music, dance and food, of the living and the dead who according to ancient Mexican beliefs come to visit from the afterlife. It has become a jovial way to remember the ancestors and Mexican culture where people can pay respects or reminisce anecdotes about the deceased. This colorful festival is celebrated far beyond Mexico and it arrives in Berlin as part of the Mexican Festival of the Dead at the Humboldt Forum.
At the forum you can get free entry to an exhibition which would usually cost money. The exhibition presents dream-like installations and spatial experiences which allow you to experience the theme in a multimedia and interactive way. There are audio and light narratives, eg. voices from different faith communities talk about their ideas of the afterlife. You are also immersed in a video conference with people from twelve countries discussing the topic. There is also more to offer at the event if you stay past 4pm. In addition to a market with Mexican food, arts and crafts and workshops, a colorful evening program awaits you. Highlights of the program are performances, theater, dance and live music which reflect the motifs of death and memory.
