Culture Wednesday - Tränenpalast
When the Berlin Wall divided the city from 1961 to 1989, people were able to get from one part of the city to the other at a few border crossings. The border crossing Bahnhof Friedrichstraße is located in the middle of Berlin were hundreds of travelers used to pass the border every day. The Tear Palace is a small exit hall with large windows and a flat roof where emotional scenes have occurred often: The East Germans said goodbye to their relatives and friends who returned to the West, or they left the GDR forever.
In the Tear Palace the exhibition "Place of the German Division" shows how it came to the founding of the two German states and the construction of the Berlin Wall, and how the customs and passport controls and the surveillance at the Friedrichstraße border crossing worked. The exhibition's focus is on the personal stories of the people who experienced the German division first hand.
