Culture Wednesday - Everyday Life in the GDR
Do you want to find out about the life conditions of people living in the GDR in the 70s and 80s? Then you should visit the permanent exhibition “Alltag in der DDR” in the museum Kulturbrauerei. It displays how the SED regime had an impact on public and private daily life, how people dealt with limitations and scarcity, and where they could find freedom. As a matter of fact, the GDR was neither democratic nor a republic. It was a dictatorship, which hindered free elections, participation in political power and freedom of movement. In the theme-rooms of the exhibition you will see original objects, which are displaced in every-day scenes. You can take a seat in a restaurant, in a living room or in a parlor, and there you can discover something about free time and improvisation, house construction and working life in the GDR. Moreover, common objects are supplemented by historical documents, eyewitness reports and contemporary film material, so that you are given the chance to consider the DDR daily life under different perspectives.
