Culture Wednesday

Naturkundemuseum

Opened as the Museum für Naturkunde in 1889, this is one of the three major Museums in Germany and a house to more than 30 million zoological, paleontological, mineralogical specimens – their most famous exhibitions include the largest mounted dinosaur in the world and a well-preserved specimen of the earliest known bird. Alongside those, they also exhibit mineral collections dating back to the 1700s that represent 75 % of the minerals around the world, a large meteor collection containing the largest piece of amber in the world and even now-extinct animals like the tasmanian tiger and “Bobby”, a gorilla-celebrity from the 1920s and 30s. In 2007 a large hall with explanations of biodiversity and demonstrations of the processes of evolution was added to the museum and in 2011 the eastern wing, damaged by the allies during WWII, finally got fixed and now holds the alcohol collections, which are only partly opened to the public. If you're curious about where the world started out and how we ended up here, come along with us!
