Topographie des Terror

We visited the Stasi Museum last week. But what happened before all of that?

The history museum "Topography of Terror" has existed since the 1980s to show everything that was lost, found and kept after the Second World War. After the end of World War II in 1945, the building was bombed and smashed by the Allies. Part of the Berlin Wall ran all the way down this street, marking the tension between the American and Soviet protected zones, and was never really taken down, which makes it the longest remainder of the outer Berlin wall, as the one in the East Side Gallery section was part of the inner wall. Before it became a permanent museum in 2004 following Peter Zumthor’s design after he won an architectural competition, the site was a car dump in the 1970s, and there’s still some things left of it. The museum was officially opened to the public on May 6th, 2010 – the 65th anniversary of the end of World War II.
